Many people have questions about rugs and about RenCollection. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions (FAQs) about buying and caring for hand-made Persian rugs and Oriental rugs.
What is the difference between a Persian rug and an Oriental rug?
A Persian rug is one that comes from Persia, or modern-day Iran. Many designers and homeowners prize these rugs highly because of their designs, color, and workmanship. An Oriental rug is a rug from countries along the old Oriental trade routes, including Persia, China, and India. So, while a Persian rug is also an Oriental rug, not all Oriental rugs are Persian rugs.
Do all Persian and Oriental rugs have ornate designs?
People often think of highly ornate designs with vines and filigree and medallions when they think of Persian and Oriental rugs. But there is actually a wide range of designs. Many rugs have contemporary designs that look like modern paintings, and some have strongly geometric designs. Tribal rugs in particular are known for bold geometric designs and color.
What do the names mean? Tabriz, Oushak, Savonnerie, etc.
One of the most frequently asked questions about rugs! Most often the name refers to the city or region where the rug was made. A Tabriz rug comes from the city of Tabriz, for example. Historically, rug makers within a particular city or region adopted similar design styles, and those styles became associated with those place names.
Why are some rugs more expensive than others?
Another frequently asked question. All RenCollection rugs are made by hand by highly skilled craftsmen and women. One rug can take a crew of several people working full time a year or more to complete. In addition, the materials are of the highest quality. Pricing usually depends on the type and size of rug, the age and condition in the case of vintage rugs, and the place of origin.
How do I care for my Persian or Oriental rug?
The best way would be to have your rug cleaned annually (or more often if emergencies occur) by professionals such as RenCollection’s team of restoration and cleaning experts. Between professional cleanings, there are things you can do. Most importantly, avoid any sort of spills or stains. But of course, things happen. This link shows methods for spot-removing stains, but approach with extreme care. Never steam clean a wool rug. Vacuum no more frequently than twice a month. Set your vacuum to a height right for the pile of the rug. When vacuuming be very careful of any fringe. Airing the rug in the sun will help remove stale odors, but avoid extended exposure to high temperatures. Please call us if you have any cleaning- or restoration-related questions about rugs.
Does RenCollection have oversize rugs?
RenCollection has rugs of every shape and size. Among our largest is a rug that is 18’6″ x 27’8″. We also have rugs for smaller rooms, runners of every length for hallways, and even round rugs. Recently we helped a designer who had been searching for a pair of identical rugs of a specific size. That’s not easy to find with hand-made rugs, but we had several pair of rugs for her to choose from. Now she and her client are both happy.
Does RenCollection deliver?
Another frequently asked question. We actually prefer to deliver and install our rugs. We find homeowners are usually more pleased with rugs when they are professionally installed. It does make a difference. Call to learn about our delivery and installation services.
